Suddenly, Sedona sizzles NATIVE CULTURES Arthur Frommer |
|
| GLOBETROTTING WITH ARTHUR FROMMER Sedona, Ariz. -- For years, it flourished "underground," a travel secret as closely guarded as the name of a favorite Paris bistro or a cheap Hong Kong tailor. Suddenly, Sedona has surfaced. A half-dozen times in the past month, travel colleagues have pulled me aside to whisper that a hot new destination -- Sedona -- was coming on strong. And I, a rise to bookstores, the downtown Center for the New Age, crystal shops and restaurants. Drawn in part by the reputed energy of the rocks, but more by the light and the landscape, some 200 artists and perhaps another 200 craftspeople work here and show their creations in galleries and shops. The Sedona Arts Center is their headquarters, as well as a site for a wide variety of performing arts. Elsewhere in Sedona, galleries and shops are clustered in the recreation of a Mexican crafts village called Tlaquepaque. Other most impossible angle. But all is forgiven when you step out and find yourself standing high atop Submarine Rock, surveying the vast panorama of rocky cliffs. Marty Wolf's Earth Wisdom Jeep Tours (928-282-4714) features journeys that put one in touch with the teaching of the Native Americans -- their myth, lore and methods of natural living and healing. So credible are these tours, led by highly sensitive guides, that one, the Earth Medicine Workshop, is accepted by several schools as a continuing education credit for nurses. Call 928-282-4714 for information on tours. |
